Junior Unihoc Compitition 2007On 17th November, the hall was set, the boys had arrived, the staff were ready, well almost… Having established that the four companies that entered would play each other at least once in 6miniute games, with a points system to establish a league table, with a final the boys were almost ready. The companies that were entering (9th, 18th, 22nd & 23rd) had groups of varying numbers, and some boys joined different companies to make up the numbers, an early sign of t event. The games were played, and whilst the teams were waiting they concentrated there efforts on the potted sports competition that was going on next door. Then it came to the final, which had to be the tensest moment of my career as captain to date. It was the 22nd v 18th. ![]() The 22nd conceded excellent early goal, a sign of how good the teams were. 3minutes later and it looked as if it was all over, the 18th were defending well and the 22nd couldn’t make a break, but then it happened, a stunning equalizer by the 22nd. Both teams had all to play for, and they we both truly fantastic. With a minute to go the 22nd scored again. Could the 22nd win? There we 40seconds on the clock when the game was paused for an injury… could it have been dragged out any more?! When the game recommenced both teams played with all their might, it may have only been 40 seconds in a Junior Unihoc game, but both teams played for the win. Then that was it, the final whistle went, and it was Game over, with the Final Score 2-1 to the 22nd Southend Coy. Playstation GamesThe 6th organised Playstation Games for Company Section boys on Saturday 2nd June. Members of the 10th, 25th, 1st, 24th & 23rd took part, using the game 'Need for Speed Underground 2'. Each boy had two goes of a two lap race and each companies time was averaged to find the winner. The top 5 boys then re-raced to find an individual winner. Results:
Junior Section BowlingJuniors met at Leigh Super Bowl on March 8th for the Battalion Bowling Competition It was a well attended and obviously popular event being staged for the third year with 41 boys from 1st, 2nd, 9th, 18th, 22nd and 25th Companies. With only 5 lanes available this meant slight oversubscription to what was expected and required a juggling of lane allocation to ensure everyone got a chance to bowl. The boys were each allocated a lane to bowl on so that they had the chance to meet and talk with others from different companies. There were prizes for the best overall score, the best average company score and most strikes over two games. Keeping them away from the distraction of the food bar and the games machines seemed to be the order of the day for the staff who turned up but nevertheless everyone helped to keep the balls rolling and the timing working for a 5pm finish. Meetings will start from Monday, February 25th, 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. We managed to get a full story in the "Evening Echo" - see here (PDF file) 9th's Success in MasterTeamThe 9th South East Essex Company won England and Wales National Masterteam Competition 2006/7 and qualified for the National finals in Scotland in April. From an initial entry of nearly 70 teams and three rounds of tough questions, the team from Shoeburyness and Thorpe Bay Baptist Church, Southend-on-Sea will be one of two teams representing England and Wales against teams from Scotland and Ireland in Inverness on 21 April. The team of Owen Churton, Richard Churton, Matthew Payne and Matt Smythe had a close game in the second round at Worcester Park, Surrey, narrowly qualifying behind 14th Kingston & Merton Company. The third round at Hoddesdon, Herts, produced a nail-biting evening with five teams closely matched. There were never more than 3 points between the top two teams but the 9th held their lead over their nearest rivals, 14th Kingston & Merton and reversed the result of the previous round winning by 67 to 66.5 . Plans are being made to raise the funds to take the team and some supporters to Inverness for an exciting weekend in Scotland. The Boys are really looking forward to meeting the teams from the other nations and pitting their wits against them. 20th South East Essex Company (Leigh Road Baptist)We have learnt that in the summer the church has taken the sad decision to close BB at Leigh Road. This is because of a lack of leaders in the company; it was felt that, as there was no GB at the church, they would combine their youth work into Covenanters. It is sad to see a company with their history fold, especially as they had good numbers of lads in the Anchors and Juniors. 2nd Basildon CompanyIt is with sadness that we recently learnt of the closure of 2nd Basildon Company. As we look to the "Engage a Generation" development, this brings home the challenges that we face. Ray WallWe further saddened by news that another BB man associated with the former 11th Coy (Ferndale BC), Ray Wall died shortly before Christmas. Ray had been Captain of the 11th for many years and more recently served the Battalion as Company Section Secreatary. |
