Young People Go Paintballing

Going Ballistic!

On Saturday, 11th July, 16-25 year olds within the Boys' Brigade in South East Essex had a great day at Goballistic Paintballing in Rochford.

The 17 people from BB joined others at the venue for various challenges and team building exercises, including ‘Capture the Flag’.

The event was held so that young adults serving as helpers and young leaders in the 13 South East Essex companies  had the opportunity to get together for a social event of their own and it proved to be just that.

The day was a great success; everyone had an amazing (albeit bruising) time and look forward to the next event.

Junior Section Bowling

Winning Juniors

Junior Section boys had a great afternoon at Broadway Superbowl, Leigh, competing in the Annual Bowing competition. Over 50 children aged of 7 to 11 attended from 7 companies. They competed for the ‘Most Strikes’, highest individual Score and overall winning company.

The winning company was 9th.

We are grateful for the help of Broadway Superbowl who hosted the event and donated a trophy and prizes.

1st Southend on Sea Company Centenary

Current members present at the Special Church service on Sunday

The 1st SoS Coy was founded September 1909 and marked its 100th birthday at a special church service on 27th September when badges, designed by members Charlie Blades (6) and John Garner (11), were presented to all current members.

Ben and Josh cut the Centenary Cake

A celebration party was also held for all the boys, their friends and children of the neighbourhood. The Centenary cake was cut by the youngest member, Ben Wheatley(5) and the eldest, Josh Harrington-Burnett (14).

Past members and friends joined for a meal at a local restaurant during which they raised over £100 for Anusaran, a school in India. The Boys became interested in this charity during the summer, as a few of their leaders at camp visit the school to support the work there.

9th's success in National Badminton

The team Rich,Edan, Matt, Jon,Tom

The 9th SEE Coy (Shoeburyness and Thorpe Bay BC) have continued their success in the national competitions run by the Boys Brigade. The Badminton team comprising Richard Churton, Matthew Payne, Tom Sibthorpe, Edan Cohen and Jonathan Morell are the top team in England and Wales after the National Finals in Scotland.

Following an early evening flight from Stansted to Glasgow, they arrived in Sportscotland’s National Centre in Largs, North Ayrshire where they met the other teams. They qualified through a competition that is a knockout tournament in which the top two teams in England and Wales go forward to play teams from Scotland and Ireland. Over 110 teams entered the competition this year. In the knockout stages, the team have beaten teams from Clacton-on-Sea, Nottingham and Warrington to reach the National Finals.

On the Saturday an early start was followed by the competition itself. The team of four (plus a reserve) played six doubles games of ‘best of three’ sets in matches against the eventual winners (Polmont from Scotland) and the runners up (Mountjoy from Northern Ireland). The final round saw the lads drawn against the other English team who were from Crowborough in Sussex who they beat to claim the top spot in England and Wales and came fifth overall.

The finals were organised and overseen by tournament referee and umpires from Badminton Scotland who gave up their time to volunteer to make this a memorable final for everyone there. Later that evening, following a selection of music by a bagpipe and drum band by the local Boys Brigade Company, awards were presented at a Civic Reception hosted by the Provost of North Ayrshire Council. The meal included traditional Scottish dishes such as haggis (piped in by a lone piper), neaps and tatties and clootie dumpling. They returned after some sight-seeing on the Sunday evening, tired, pleased with their progress over the competition and looking forward to the start of the next season.
