BB Anchor badgeWhat is BB in S E Essex?

Boys' Brigade ("BB") is a national, christian organisation for boys and young men. It offers a varied and flexible programme of activities, in a friendly supportive environment to encourage  personal development and growth in the christian faith.

There are eleven local units ("companies") of Boys' Brigade in S E Essex; together they form the South East Essex Battalion.

The website will show what Boys' Brigade is about and bring news of latest activities in S E Essex.

Events / Activities update

Next Council Meeting

Tuesday 26th January, 8:00 pm at Hawkwell Baptist Church.

Company Update

Sadly, we have to report that the 2nd Wickford Company (Shotgate Baptist Church) has closed.

We are pleased that the 9th (Shoeburyness Baptist) have been able to re-open Anchor Boys and Junior Sections.

The 6th have recently launched their new website.

Seniors and young Leaders

We have set up a Facebook Group so that our Seniors and young Leaders can link up to share news and thoughts. Please tell the young people in your Company (School year 10 and above) about this and encourage them to join. This will also be used to promote future events, so young people in BB may learn about these, even if they do not contribute.

Jack Petchey Awards Scheme

BB in S E Essex has been accepted as a participant in the above award scheme.

The battalion may nominate members in the company, senior or AMICUS section (up to nine in a year) for an award for a personal achievement that they have made. The winner of each award will receive a certificate, badge and cheque for £200 for their Company, to be spent on a project/item of equipment of their choice.

Thames Barge

Thames sailing bargeThe boat in our banner above is a Thames sailing barge. These vessels traded around the Essex and Kent coasts and up the river to London. Their shallow draught allowed them to enter the creeks and small estuaries of the area.

According to folklore, a barge was crewed by a man, a boy and a dog.

Many have been preserved, either privately or with businesses offering cruises.

There is a barge race every year, off the coast of Southend on Sea.
