Thames Barge

Thames ailing bargeThe boat in our banner above is a Thames sailing barge. These vessels traded around the Essex and Kent coasts and up the river to London. Their shallow draught allowed them to enter the creeks and small estuaries of the area.

According to folklore, a barge was crewed by a man, a boy and a dog.

Many have been preserved, either privately or with businesses offering cruises.

There is a barge race every year, off the coast of Southend on Sea.
